Q&A Interview with Jodie Kiss

Q: Let us start with your background. How did you first get involved in the automotive industry?

Jodie: My journey into the automotive world began 19 years ago. I started my apprenticeship in automotive electrical work, primarily focusing on forklifts. Over the years, I’ve gained extensive experience in various aspects of the industry, including mechanical assessments and panel repairs.

Q: Could you tell us more about your role as a Senior Motor Assessor at Hello Claims?

Jodie: As a Senior Motor Assessor at Hello Claims, I specialise in handling complex assessments, including those involving liability and mechanical issues. My role involves assessing damages, determining liability, and ensuring fair and accurate settlements for our clients.

Q: Being one of the first female motor assessors in New Zealand is undoubtedly a remarkable achievement. Can you share some insights into the challenges you’ve faced along the way?

Jodie: Being a woman in a predominantly male field certainly presented its challenges. However, I’ve been fortunate to have had supportive employers throughout my career, including my current team at Hello Claims New Zealand. While there have been obstacles, I’ve always remained focused on honing my skills and proving my capabilities.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career as an assessor?

Jodie: The opportunity to transition into assessment work came about when Nick Herford and Sharnie Thomson, my mentors at Hello Claims, offered me the chance to undergo training as a motor assessor in 2019. I saw it as a new challenge and a chance to expand my knowledge and expertise in the industry.

Q: How has your background in automotive engineering and previous experience as a qualified entry certifier contributed to your role as an assessor?

Jodie: My background has given me a strong foundation in understanding vehicle mechanics, electrical systems, and structural integrity. This knowledge is invaluable when assessing damage and determining the extent of repairs needed. Additionally, my experience as an entry certifier has given me insights into panel repairs and structural assessments. This helped further enhance my skill set as an assessor.

Advice to aspiring women in automotive claims

Q: What advice would you give to other women aspiring to pursue a career in the automotive industry?
